Welcome to Anime of the week number 47. Are you a fan of mecha animes? Do you love animes with a complex story? Then the following anime is perfect for you: Aldnoah.Zero.

Aired:

Season 1 ~ July 6, 2014 to September 21, 2014 (Summer 2014)
Season 2 ~ January 11, 2015 to March 29, 2015 (Winter 2015)

Synopsis:

The discovery of a hypergate on the moon once allowed the human race to teleport to Mars. Those who chose to settle there unearthed a technology far more advanced than that of their home planet, which they named “Aldnoah”. This discovery led to the founding of the Vers Empire of Mars and a declaration of war against the “Terrans”, those who stayed behind on Earth. However a battle on the moon – later called “Heaven’s Fall” – caused the hypergate to explode, destroying the moon and leading the two planets to establish an uneasy ceasefire.

Their peace was a fragile one, however. Fifteen years later, high school student Inaho Kaizuka witnesses the plotted assassination of the Vers Empire’s Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, who had come to Earth in hopes of repairing the relationship between the empire and its homeland. The ceasefire is shattered and the Martians declare war on the Terrans once again. In the face of this insurmountable enemy, Inaho and his friends must now fight against the Vers Empire to settle the war once and for all.

My Opinion:

One doesn’t have to be a fan of mechas to be entertained in this anime. Despite me saying that the show has a complex story, it is really easy to follow. Compared to the “main character being lucky, somehow gets an overpowered mecha and beats every enemy he stumbles upon” cliché was something refreshing back in 2014. The main character always comes up with some amazing ass-whooping battle strategies which unfortunately wastes the potentials of many characters. The use of the music in this anime lets the audience know how the characters feel. The music builds up during the whole season and every emotion you’ve bottled up gets released in the final episode. The battle sequences are smooth and amazing due to the use of their CGI. The visuals are appealing and the soundtracks are cleverly put in place.

The “Terrans” get overwhelmed by the invaders from Mars at first and then the genius main character comes up with plans – using training units at first – to defeat the different invaders with their various strong- and cool-looking mechas.

To conclude, you can say that this anime is a refreshing, one-of-a-kind anime while entertaining both mecha fans and non-mecha fans. The anime is simply emotional which is strongly represented in the finale. This is a must-watch for every action anime fan!
